Beatles LOVE Review

LOVE 5th Year Anniversary

Like millions of others, I’ve had a special place in my heart for the Beatles since I was four when we used to listen to them as we played in our backyard. Same goes for Cirque Du Soleil, having seen five shows starting with Mystere in Vegas when I was 11. So naturally I’ve been excited about finally seeing the two collide in LOVE, the Las Vegas sensation that is now on its five year anniversary.  To say I wasn’t disappointed would be a tremendous understatement, as the music, costumes, acrobatics, stage design, and overall show simply blew me away, coming off as an incredibly deserving tribute to the Fab Four.

Looking for a slower-paced, angelically beautiful, minimalistic-ly brilliant, guitar trembling, synth slamming album that is soaking wet with reverb and will even get you to bob that head occasionally? No, I’m not talking about M83‘s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, but if you’re looking for the female version of it with half the tracks and teensy bit less complexity, yet no less sincere, than look no further than former Dum Dum Girl, Frankie Rose’s second solo album, Interstellar.

This year’s Academy Awards was all about the magic of the movies.  Perhaps inspired by the likes of The Artist, Midnight in Paris, and Hugo, The Oscars wanted to cash in on some sort of nostalgic virus that seems to be going around Tinseltown these days.  Hey, let’s get Adam Sandler to talk about his inspiration for getting into the movies, and making timeless classics like Jack and Jill and Grownups.  There was just a lot of sappy reminiscing to go along with all the circle sessions that have become a Hollywood standard.

LxListening: Under the Covers

On “Codeine“, Jason Isbell sings “If there’s one thing I can’t stand, its this bar and this cover band”.  I’m not sure which he hates more; the bar or the cover band.  But in the right situation I love both of these things, and find reason to disagree with Mr. Isbell.  So, for today’s installment of LxListening I have decided to pick out 5 recent covers that deserve a little recognition.

What makes a good cover you ask me?  In my opinion, a good cover doesn’t try to reenact or mimic the original song, instead trying to take a new musical angle.  This can be anything from completely changing the arrangement, to changing the style of the music, to changing the pace.  Sometimes, a cover may be so ironic (as you’ll see below) because of who is singing it that it deserves a little attention.  Either way, check out a few of these gems below and decide for yourself whether you think there is any added value to these cover songs.  Enjoy.

Top Ten Thursday: Dynamic Duos

The week of Valentine’s Day, we did a breakup songs list and nothing else relating to love. This week, we have given off a couples barrage with reviews of Sleigh Bells and Tennis, two duos, and now this list. While most bands are five, the Beatles were the Fab Four, and three is a magic number, two can no doubt still kill it in rock & roll. Here is our top ten musical duos.
