Pitchfork Music Festival Friday Recap

Pitchfork Media, which once started as an ultra-snarky yet innovative independent music site by founder Ryan Schreiber in the late 90’s, has since bloomed into in many ways, the online flagship of indie music reviews and news coverage. Pitchfork has since toned down its ridiculously critical tone as it has risen into further prominence and the music world, and has turned into a full-fledge hipster sensation, with a site that remains on the front edge of music news, with extensive video coverage, worldwide journalism, and two music festivals to boot (with their Chicago festival now in its eighth year, and a Paris festival now in its second year). This past Friday, I had the chance to go to a day of Pitchfork Musical Festival in Chicago, the publication’s home base and where they started their festival in 2005 as the Intonation Festival. While I was only able to go the first of three days, I have attended the past two years and understand what the entire breadth of the festival is like. Here are three reasons why Pitchfork Music Festival is the best thing the indie media mogul does.

Top Ten Thursday: Brilliant Babes of Song (Our Favorite Female Singer-Songwriters)

21 Jun

Female Musician

There is nothing that turns me on more than a hot female musician, and in turn, there is nothing better than writing an entire article dedicated to these women of music. This list is partially in honor to the brilliant new efforts put forth by Fiona Apple, as well as inspiration from recently seeing acts such as Feist and St. Vincent, and topped off by the new Cat Power track that served as an announcement for her forthcoming album that will be released later in the year. This was one of our toughest lists we have compiled yet, and we all felt very strongly about the artists chosen. Unfortunately acts like St. Vincent, and Karen O were not able to be taken into consideration due to the fact that a majority of there compositions are collaborative efforts. Nonetheless, we feel very strongly that the ladies listed below are worthy of the praise they have received, and in some cases, worthy of more.

This was Riley’s second year at Bonnaroo and is a great addition to the group, even if I did get him sick halfway through the weekend. So here you have it, our final installment and our most expansive breakdown yet, summarizing everything we saw. Enjoy:

Top Ten Thursday: Bonnaroo’s Best Acts

Best Acts of Bonnaroo 2012

Our Bonnaroo coverage continues, and Todd and I are still feeling the Bonnaroo hangover so to speak – longing to be dehydrated, sun-poisoned, and soaking in hours upon hours of excellent music. Since we can’t seem to get our minds off of Roo, without further ado, here are our ten favorite acts from Bonnaroo 2012.

Weak List Wednesday: Best Moments of Bonnaroo 2012

13 Jun

bonnaroo music and arts festival 2012

Bonnaroo: the greatest music festival to be held in the United States. Nothing compares to it. If you want to try to compare it to any other festival you have to deal with these facts: It will have a better lineup. It will have a better schedule. It will have longer set times. It will have better food. The crowds won’t suck. And, it has no curfew. That means it gets up earlier and goes to bed later than anything in its category. After 2 days of recovery, I’m finally ready to talk about it. Wes gave everyone a fairly detailed rundown of he highlights yesterday, so I figured I would take a different approach.
