Top Ten Thursday: Best Artists of the Aughts (2000-2009)

18 Apr

best_of_the_aughts

This was a particularly tough list to put together.  On average, order one of our Top Ten lists takes about 45 minutes.  Over an hour and a half into our last meeting, we still only had the top six ironed out for this one.  We ended up just individually ranking the final eight candidates individually, and normalizing the results to select the final four on the list.  It worked out though, and I didn’t even have to swan dive off my balcony, as I threatened several times throughout the meeting.

So let me tell you a little bit about our decision making process in selecting the top ten artists of the first decade of the new millennium.  It was about as simple as weighing quantity and quality.  To some degree, we also factored in the amount of lackluster material an artist had working against them.  In the end, ever artist in the ten had at least three good to great albums during the decade.  Painfully, M.I.A., LCD Soundsystem, and a few others didn’t have the consistent presence throughout the entire decade like most others on here and missed out.  Also, great artists like Beck, Ryan Adams, Spoon, and Bright Eyes just missed out because while they had the quantity, their highs just weren’t quite as high as others on the list.

So there you have it.  Enjoy the read, and as always let us know who me missed, left off, or mistakenly included.

10.  The Strokes

the strokes, full band pic

The Strokes were one of those rare bands where the product lived up to all the hype preceding them.  They produced some refreshingly honest pop music that ushered a whole new group of fans into “indie” music.  Beneath the surface of The Strokes instantly accessible music were simple but perfect harmonies, taking them beyond what was expected of an early-20′s rock outfit in the early 2000′s.

Triple Threat of Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake 20/20 Experience Songs

We at LxL are admittedly pumped about Justin Timberlake’s return to music with his upcoming album 20/20 Experience and upcoming tour with Jay-Z. To show our pumped-ness for the new JT, we figured we would drop the first three released songs in a post for your listening pleasure in case you haven’t caught them. Three songs because JT himself is a triple threat: singer, actor, and renaissance man.

Beyonce’s Halftime Show Review

4 Feb

Beyonce, halftime, hot

Ahhh the Super Bowl. Americas most viewed day of television. The day where without any excuse or regard, it is not only acceptable but encouraged to gorge yourself with incredibly unhealthy food and drink. Generally shared with a group of friends or family, and whether you care about the sport of football or not, it is destined to be a fun day for all. Yes, it comes with down sides. For instance, Baltimore winning last night was quite the let-down. Joe Flacco taking home the MVP trophy was even a bit more of a disappointment. But aside from certain teams winning or losing, peoples expectations of everything that surrounds the game are set very high. The commercials for instance, are even critiqued and ridiculed as if the one purpose they serve is to thoroughly entertain the viewer, not advertise a product to them. And of course, we have the halftime show. The sometimes dreaded (Black Eyed Peas), sometimes scandalous (JT and Janet Jackson), and sometimes decrepit (Rolling Stones/Paul McCartney) halftime show. This year, was not any of these things. In fact, quite the opposite. This year we were blessed with watching one of the most beautiful creatures that walks this Earth do what she does best: Entertain. The one and only Mrs. Carter. Sasha Fierce. The Queen of Single Ladies everywhere. Blue Ivy’s Mom. Beyonce!

The 5 Most Thankful Songs For Thanksgiving!

21 Nov

Thanksgiving, Turkey, day, holiday, thanks, pilgrims, native americans

LxL is taking a short hiatus for the upcoming holiday weekend, but before we go we wanted to give thanks for our favorite songs that also happen to give thanks in their own right. Because this is not a Top Ten Thursday post, we decided to keep things short and sweet with five solid tracks in this edition of Weak List Wednesday: Thanks!. We feel these tracks best represent the spirit of thankfulness, glorified gluttony, and pilgrims eating Native Americans … I mean pilgrims eating WITH the Native Americans … wait how’d that go? Anyways, onto the list:

The Legend of John Legend

20 Nov

Who ever decided John Legend should be featured on every major hip-hop release to come out, and when was this decision made?  God, that’s who.  It is true God rested on the seventh day, but in all actuality he spent the majority of that seventh day contemplating the creation of singer/songwriter John Legend almost 8,000 years later.  Hit the jump for the main talking points of why John Legend was actually not a gift from God, but a curse.
