Top Ten Thursday: Album Three Peats

Top Ten Three Consecutive Great Albums

The great Chicago music podcast “Sound Opinions” had a really good baseball themed episode about music “Grand Slams”, where a band released four excellent albums in a row. While we won’t rip them off directly, since it’s the basketball playoffs, 2/3rds of LxL is in Chicago, and MJ won 2 three-peats, we thought we would give to you the best three-peats to start a career, or the top ten artists who started their career with three great-to-perfect albums. Not to mention Vampire Weekend just released their third and best album, making them a wonderful candidate for this three-peat list. So here we go.

10. TV On the Radio

The Albums: Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes, Return to Cookie Mountain, Dear Science
TV On the Radio, Album, cover art, dear science, cookie mountain, youth
In my opinion, the Brooklyn noise-rockers got severely underrated at 10. TV On The Radio released three of the best albums of the aughts, albums that howled, swooned, burned, and celebrated in front of their apocalyptic sound.

Top Ten Thursday: Sophomore Surges

13 Sep

In honor of starting our second year as a full-functioning blog, we decided to make a top ten list of the best sophomore albums, in hopes of a sign of things to come for us.  We already tackled sophomore slumps, and hope to avoid the same fate of the likes of Puff Daddy, Hot Hot Heat, and Weezer (Pinkerton…YUCK!).  Hopefully you enjoy the next year of reading our little slice of internets as much as we enjoy these next ten albums.  One quick note; although we titled the list “sophomore surges”, we simply looked at the best sophomore albums more than the “surge”.  In a few cases the second album may not even be as good as the first, but is still great in its own right.  Thanks for reading, and as always feel free to give your suggestions on what we overlooked, over-included, or why we just plain suck.

LxListening: Girls

11 May

songs about girls, Neil Diamond

In all actuality, this Friday’s edition of LxListening contains songs that have “girl(s)” in the title, instead of just songs about girls.  This theme could also probably have innumerable sequels because as we all know, musicians’ favorite lyrical subject is romantic entanglements with the opposite sex.  I decided also to select one “girl” song from each of the past 6 decades for your listening enjoyment.  So whether girls are black, drunk, or fat-bottomed, they all deserve a song.  Enjoy!

LxListening: Coachella Aftermath

27 Apr

coachella, aftermath, after coachella, post coachella, 2012, music festival

It has now been a full week since I walked onto the Polo Fields of Indio, where Mitchell, Sean, and I arrived at our tent at 4 AM, demanding that the rest of the crew awaken to join us in celebrating our arrival and the weekend of fun, music, and debauchery ahead of us with some cold brews. Typically after substantially memorable weekends like last, I usually like to wallow the following week, doing and listening to things that remind me of the fun vacation recently passed, in an attempt to relive the moments over and over again. Last weekend was no exception, and I have found myself gravitating to the most memorable music from Coachella weekend, whether it was a part of the music festival or not. So here is a short list of things I’ve bee listening to since Coachella weekend, in attempts to remind me of Coachella weekend.
