How Music Works

how music works david byrne book review

The great Talking Heads front man David Byrne wrote the generically titled How Music Works late last year, but the book is anything but generic. Byrne has never released a auto-biography about himself or the band, but he coyly uses this book and the various subjects in the book to essentially give huge glimpses of his personal story. The title makes it sound like it may describe how music works from a physiological or neurological standpoint, but that’s obviously not Byrne’s expertise. His expertise however, as a 40-year music industry expert is to discuss all the external factors that affect the music that is made – including the venue, the recording process, technology, the trends, and much more.

The 5 Most Thankful Songs For Thanksgiving!

21 Nov

Thanksgiving, Turkey, day, holiday, thanks, pilgrims, native americans

LxL is taking a short hiatus for the upcoming holiday weekend, but before we go we wanted to give thanks for our favorite songs that also happen to give thanks in their own right. Because this is not a Top Ten Thursday post, we decided to keep things short and sweet with five solid tracks in this edition of Weak List Wednesday: Thanks!. We feel these tracks best represent the spirit of thankfulness, glorified gluttony, and pilgrims eating Native Americans … I mean pilgrims eating WITH the Native Americans … wait how’d that go? Anyways, onto the list:

Talking Heads (Cover Band) Show Review

Talking Heads tribute band, This Must Be The Band show review at the Vic Theater

Sometimes the universe just has its way.

Fellow LxLer Todd came to visit me in Chicago this past Saturday, and we had no clue what to do that night. So we took to the internets, and found that This Must Be The Band, a Talking Heads cover band, was playing at the Vic Theater that night. Unfortunately, we discovered the show was sold out, but just as we were about to give up, “This Must Be The Place”, the Talking Heads classic, came on the speakers in the restaurant we were in. This told us that we were meant to go to this show, even if we would have to scalp tickets. So we land at the Vic that night, and scalped tickets were going for ridiculous rates. One scalper said $80, which is hilarious considering Todd said he saw the Rolling Stones for less than that, and this is just a cover band. But through Todd’s smoozing of the venue employees, we actually got into the show for free. It was fate after all.

Top Ten Thursday: Life is a Highway (Best Road Trip Songs)

18 Oct

road trippin'

Wes is on a pretty epic 12-day road trip out to Seattle, then up to Vancouver, and back to Chicago.  Along the way, him and Jackie (his wife for the uninitiated) are stopping at Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone, and many other beautiful places along the way.  In honor of this trip, and in hopes of his safe return, we put our heads together to come up with the top ten road trip songs to keep Wes and Jackie alert, energized, and most importantly awake on this endeavor.

We tried to limit our choices for this list to songs actually about traveling to some degree.  There are many songs and albums that we more abstractly view as road trip songs, but that would have opened this list up to too many options.  We hope you enjoy these songs of the road, and as always feel free to bring more road trip songs of your preference to our attention.

David Byrne and St. Vincent live at Chicago Theatre show review

It’s pretty much a foregone conclusion: supergroups and high-profile collaborations rarely live up to their billing…on record. On stage, there is nothing more electrifying than seeing your favorite artists join forces on stage for an overwhelming level of talent. Whether it was Oysterhead, Monsters of Folk, or Kanye and Jay-Z, every high-profile collaboration I have seen has left me knocked out on the floor wanting more.
